Enjoy the visitor attractions in the Old Harbour
Iceland is one of the top destinations in the world for whale watching. More than twenty different types of cetaceans visit its shores on a regular basis and sightings are commonplace. To give yourself the best chance of an encounter, it’s best to book a boat trip. Whale watching trips suitable for all ages depart throughout the year. The most easily accessible from ODDSSON Midtown are those that leave from Reykjavik’s Old Harbour. Afterwards, be sure to call in to Whales of Iceland to find out more about the species that you’ve seen and those that proved a little more elusive.
Step behind a waterfall
Travel further afield and you’ll share the wonder of Iceland’s magnificent landscapes. South Coast tours are justifiably popular, not least for a pair of waterfalls that are great to explore. Tours call in at Seljalandsfoss, where you can follow a short, family-friendly trail that leads to the waterfall. Duck under the rocky overhang and watch the curtain of water fall in front of you – a rare occurrence, even in a place such as Iceland where waterfalls are a frequent sight. You’ll combine it with Skógafoss, a splendid waterfall with a metal staircase beside it. Climb the steps for a jaw-dropping view of the falls from above and the coastline below.
Head to the beach
Iceland’s northerly location means that a trip to the beach takes a different form. Instead of paddling in the sea, explore rocky shores and sandy coves on foot. Some of the best beaches in the country can be found on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a part of West Iceland easily doable as a day trip from the hotel. At Ytri-Tunga, you might spot seals in the water or on the sand. Meanwhile, at Djúpalónssandur beach the attraction is its unusual geology – it’s known for its rock formations including beads of lava that resemble black pearls. Here too you’ll find the Dritvík lifting stones, once used to test the fitness of those who wanted to work on the fishing boats. Which of your friends will manage to pick them up?
