Harpa Concert Hall

Though Harpa Concert Hall is located close to Reykjavik’s Old Harbour, you can reach it by bus from ODDSSON Midtown hotel in around 15 minutes. This is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city, a triumph of glass panels whose differing shapes bring delight to those who look closely enough to notice. It really comes into its own at night, when LED lights illuminate the whole façade of the building. The stylish interior is just as wonderful so it’s well worth stepping inside.

Perlan

Easily reached after a ten minute drive or a short ride on the bus, Perlan is one of Reykjavik’s most recognisable buildings. A glass dome perches on top of six cylindrical water tanks to create a structure that’s unique to Reykjavik. The glass dome floods the atrium with light and a rooftop terrace provides the platform for some breathtaking views over the city and to the mountains beyond.

Hallgrimskirkja

Getting to Hallgrimskirkja from ODDSSON Midtown involves a similar length journey. The unique design, which takes its inspiration from the basalt cliffs found in the Icelandic countryside, is the work of Guðjón Samúelsson. The strong curves draw the eye upwards to the heavens which is of course fitting for a place of worship. Incidentally, as the country’s first state architect, Samúelsson also designed the striking Sundhöllin baths which opened in 1937.

Ásmundarsafn Sculpture Museum

The remarkable building that houses the Ásmundarsafn Sculpture Museum is also of interest to architecture buffs. Artist Ásmundur Sveinsson himself designed the building, which was his home for a while. Its clean white lines – a nod to the Mediterranean – are sleek and sophisticated, the perfect backdrop to the sculptures that he placed both inside and out.

Alþingishúsið (Parliament House)

Alþingishúsið is also an easy bus ride or short hop in a taxi from the hotel. It’s built in a classic style, the work of Danish architect, Ferdinand Meldahl. He dictated that Icelandic stone – dolerite in fact – should be used in its construction and unadorned, it makes a bold impression. Nearby, Reykjavik City Hall is a more recent addition to the cityscape and one that was controversial among some locals who didn’t think it was in keeping with the architecture in the surrounding area.

The Recycled House

The Recycled House is ten minutes by car from the hotel or just under an hour’s scenic walk through Laugardalur (Hot Springs Valley) and along the Sculpture and Shore Walk. It’s one of the quirkiest buildings in the Icelandic capital, built by filmmaker Hrafn Gunnlaugsson from salvaged materials. Unconventional, eccentric, provocative and some would say downright bizarre, you’ll either love it or hate it.
